Position Duration: June 7, 2021 – August 30, 2021
Accessibility: As a Counselor in a Children’s Recreation Camp operated by a charitable organization, this occupation is exempt from hours of work and rest periods under Alberta Labor standards. This exemption is used to provide maximum camper safety.
Role: You are a mentor and love to engage with children and youth. You are an enthusiastic individual who seeks to provide leadership and supervision in a variety of day camps for ages 6-12.
Compensation: Starting at $17.00/hr
What You’ll Do:
Assist in recruiting, training, coaching and supervising day camp staff and volunteers.
Regularly offer recognition and feedback to staff and volunteers, ensure that high-quality service is being delivered and act accordingly to fill any gaps seen.
Prepare day camp rosters and assist with delivery of day camp brochures or other marketing tools.
Communicate Schedule and Bus bookings to camp staff in regard to program sites, and booking of guests and field trips. Plan, organize, and facilitate a guest speaker and/or field trip as required.
Leading program planning sessions and evaluating day camp programming for all Summer Day Camps for ages 6-12.
Lead campers in daily physical activity and physical literacy skill development
Facilitate games that introduce and educate campers on selected sports. Integrate an international focus on various sports outside of North America.
Assist campers in learning about physical literacy and developing agility. Build and develop basic sports skills including hand eye coordination, shooting, passing, strength, stamina, and endurance
Role model good sportsmanship and encourage and teach campers to practice sportsmanlike conduct
Ensure each camper receives a YMCA positive progress report, and they are accurately completed.
Facilitate introductory dry land and group fitness
Maintain a full understanding of the Health & Safety procedures and teach them as needed to ensure the safety of staff, volunteers, and camp members.
Lead by example and promote a personal understanding of and appreciation for the mission, vision, and values and the YMCA programs and services. Always follow standards and policies of the YMCA of Northern Alberta.
What You’ll Need for This Job
High school or a current post-secondary student in Education, Physical Education or related field.,
Standard First Aid and CPR-C, WHMIS Certification.
Child Welfare & Police Security Clearance (provided upon hire).
NCCP FMS Training & High Five Sport Certification required (we will provide this training before summer camp starts)
Minimum 2 years’ experience working in Camp.
Demonstrated leadership skills.
Well- developed interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills
