The University of Alberta is looking for a motivated and collaborative Intermediate Systems Administrator to join the Windows Infrastructure Services team. Reporting to the Team Lead, Windows Infrastructure Services, the Intermediate Systems Administrator provides system administration on campus to ensure the availability, efficiency and security of all servers that run on premise and the public cloud. The Intermediate Systems Administrator provides input and information in the planning, implementation, configuration of new services, and participates in developing procedures and standards for reliable and sustainable operation of Windows servers.
Duties
Administers a large number of Windows servers that run on premise or in the public Cloud and that run critical University services.
Applies system and security patches as in defined guidelines and best practices.
Provides input in developing standards for servers – operating systems, security policies, and best practices.
Performs disaster recovery and data restore tests per defined guidelines to ensure business continuity.
Monitors all servers and services to ensure availability and efficiency of services.
Proactively and reactively handles alerts produced by the central monitoring service
Coordinates outage windows with clients and teams when necessary
Documents any information gaps on new and existing servers and services
Leverages automation technologies to help with systems administration
Acts as technical liaison to clients.
General administration of servers that support services in the central domain, and in any satellite domains that IST supports.
Administration of Windows File Services such as DFS.
Auditing file permissions
Installation and configuration of operating systems and security tools on both physical and virtual servers.
Installation and configuration of special purpose devices.
Works with other teams and clients to ensure systems are configured and deployed properly and in accordance with the team’s policies.
Leverages automation technologies to help with deployment of servers and configuration, as well as installation of tools and software
Leverages scripting languages and technologies to automate repeatable or frequently done tasks.
Troubleshoots issues affecting users and performs root cause analysis. Some issues may involve multiple systems and may require modification of existing procedures to resolve, as well as working with other teams within IST.
Works with vendors to develop work arounds or solutions to problems.
Researches and recommends technologies to enhance the efficiency of operations and quality of service, such as cloud services and automation.
Provides input in planning for future improvement, in architecting and deploying new services.
Provides technical expertise in delivering new services, troubleshooting problems.
Documents systems architecture, configurations, critical procedures and actions to be taken in troubleshooting problems.
Executes project work plans and suggests revisions as needed to support changing requirements.
Assists the project lead in developing project scope, cost, resources, impact and schedule
Provides rotating on-call support
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computing Science or related field or equivalent Technical Diploma combined with relevant experience.
Minimum 4 years of working experience with Windows systems as a system administrator in large and complex IT environment
Working knowledge of virtualization, systems security, cloud technology, automation tools
Programming/scripting experience with C, Perl, Python, sh/ksh/bash, or PowerShell, VB scripting
Minimum 2 years of working experience with Active Directory environment
Demonstrated analytical and diagnostic skills
Ability to manage multiple priorities
Excellent verbal and written communication skills, intuitive and empathetic listening skills and presentation skills
Innovative self-starter, with the ability to manage priorities and workloads under pressure
