The University of Alberta is looking for a motivated and collaborative Intermediate System Analyst to join the Unix Infrastructure Services team. Reporting to the Team Lead, Unix Infrastructure Services, the Intermediate System Analyst will ensure the availability, efficiency, and security of applications hosted on premises or in the public Cloud. In addition, the successful candidate will work with clients and other teams in preparation for the delivery of new services. This includes developing and refining procedures and standards for reliable and sustainable operation of applications.
Duties
Administers a large number of Linux applications that run critical University services.
Administers web-based applications (either commercial or open source) running on Linux or Unix hosts.
Creates, implements, refines and verifies:
Scripts and tools to allow for effective automation, monitoring and maintenance of services.
Standards and implementation guidelines for web-based applications and databases.
Implementation of security guidelines for web based applications and databases.
Develops and tests disaster recovery plans for critical services to ensure business continuity.
Develops templates and standard images for application and database servers to improve efficiency in provisioning of services and to ensure the team’s standards are maintained.
Works with other teams and clients to ensure services are configured and deployed properly.
Recommends configurations for deployment of service components.
Leverage automation technologies to help with application deployment and configuration, as well as installation of tools and software.
Troubleshoots issues affecting users and performs root cause analysis on multiple systems that affect hundreds to tens of thousands users or computers.
Acts as the lead in the diagnosis and remediation process of complex problems that can affect campus-wide services.
Provides input into the development and modification of procedures and standards for reliable and sustainable operation of applications.
Researches new technologies and makes recommendations for purchases to enhance the efficiency of operations and quality of service.
Works with other teams and stakeholders of departments or faculties to identify requirements and to design architectures that meet their technological and business needs.
Provides technical consultation to stakeholders (service owners or decision makers from faculties or departments) in delivering new services, troubleshooting problems.
Document systems architecture, configurations, critical procedures and actions to be taken in troubleshooting problems.
Executes project work plans and suggests revisions as needed to support changing requirements.
Provides rotating on-call support.
Qualifications
Bachelor’s degree in Computing Science or related field or equivalent Technical Diploma combined with relevant experience.
Minimum 4 years of experience working in large and complex IT environments.
Programming (scripting) experience with C, Perl, Python, ruby, Java, sh/ksh/bash.
Demonstrated application/database(MySQL, Postgrsql, or Oracle) administration experience.
Excellent written and verbal communications skills; experience
Effective problem solving, time management and process optimization skills.
Ability to manage multiple priorities and work under pressure.
Collaborative in team settings and able to work independently.
